Since I have been dropping Entrecards everyday I have been to a lot of websites. I sure would like to say that all of these websites have been a pleasure to go to, but then I would be lying. In truth, there has been a great number of websites and blogs that I have visited where I just want to ask the website owner why. Why do you have to commit such crimes to my ears and eyes? I have thought about writing something on my blog about it for awhile now. Usually thinking that I will let it go and people should learn eventually but I can not keep this quiet any longer!
There was one thing in particular that I have witnessed on some websites that I was hoping had gone out of style in the early 90s! You probably have all ran into it. There are even ads involving it.
Audio on page load!
This drives me bonkers! It seriously does. If I wanted to listen to your favorite song of the moment, I will find a way to listen to it. I do not want to have it blaring in my face when your website loads. I really could care less that you like that new Beyonce song or the new Carrie Underwood single. No one wants to hear the music on your website! Want a player on there? That's great. I should have the
option to press play. Instead I am often thinking, "How to I get out of here!" and quickly close the window. I no longer want to go to your site. The music on site loading has got to go. It is not awesome, cute, or neat. If you want to share your music choices there are websites such as
Last.fm for you to visit.
It isn't just music that I am hearing anymore on loading some pages. Now there are audio ads. Yes, you know it, the pay-to-play ads. They play about 5-10 seconds of some obnoxious ad when you first load the page. Are you trying to drive people
away from your site? That is exactly what you are doing. Again, when this happens I quickly close the window out. That five cents you earn from having someone run out of your website had better been worth it! Please please please take it off. There has got to be a better way to monetize your blog!
So, are we clear on the noises? Stop them! Besides it affects your load time, which brings us to the next one!
Slow loading time
I know sometimes you can not help the slow loading. Sometimes your server is having problems. Those reasons for slow loading I excuse. We just can't help that! This site goes through that a lot as well. The one way you can help it is getting rid of your 20 sidebars filled with ads. I know from experience Google does not pay you enough to add on an extra 30 seconds onto your loading time!
Oh but it is not just the ads. It is all these new fangled widgets people have! Some people have widgets for
everything it seems! Why? No one wants to know what the weather is where you live! They don't care to see that you need this five hour loading time widget to show me how much money you need us to donate to your cause of whatever it is. I really can not stand sites that take an hour to load just because of all the widgets or ads on your sites! Keep it sweet and simple! People like simple websites better than cluttered and messy ones. Tone down your sidebar and you may find your visitors appreciating you a lot more!
These are just the main two things that really really have been bugging me lately. The first one more so than the last. I am not saying just because I voiced my opinion you should make your website follow it, just take a step back and really look at your site. Does someone really want to hear that song by 50 cent? More than likely not.
I agree, very annoying. It takes wayy too long to load. They need to think that not everyone has dsl. There are still people out there with dialup! -cough-
Especially when I'm dropping entrecards by opening about 10 sites at a time through linky.
I can't find the correct tab to close fast enough.
Maybe I should aim for flashing images and pop-ups instead. Everyone loves those; right?
I too have visited a lot more blogs than usual because of Entrecard. It's great. I'm finding all kinds of neat folks...like you.
